User research and analysis
September 2023 - November 2023
In challenging times, individuals may struggle with easy access to daily essentials and food. The absence of a centralized and easily navigable platform can add to that struggle.
tiny cupboards assists those in need by providing an app and website that serve as that central hub, and help those in need access information in real-time about the resources available to them, right there in their neighborhood.
Our primary objective with the tiny cupboard project was to create a project for social good, so it was critical to ensure that the tiny cupboard app effectively addressed the challenges faced by individuals seeking assistance and community pantries striving to provide support.
Throughout these case studies, I have followed the Design Thinking Process to create human-centered design through empathy, ideation, prototypes, testing, and iteration to refine our design. This process helps put the needs and experiences of end-users front and center throughout the entire design journey.
User research was gathered through first and second-hand sources of information. This included interviews, and research into the options currently available to those in need. The research gathered helped to provide a series of pain points which could then be sorted into three main topics.
Our User Research conducted for tiny cupboard helped to form the foundation for creating detailed personas, with specific needs, preferences, and pain points.
Creating a clear foundational structure involved the meticulous process of building information architecture, low-fidelity paper wireframes, and digital wireframes and prototypes. This is accomplished through iterative sketching, usability testing, translating those insights into organization and interaction, and gathering feedback.
We used our low-fidelity digital wireframes to evaluate usability for our mobile app. This usability test helped provide information about how our users access the information provided on our app, and improve the design and navigability.
Users were asked to perform tasks in an unmoderated environment, and answer research questions and provide feedback.

Users were asked to navigate the app and discover the free resources available to them in their area.
The low-fidelity prototypes were translated into more detailed mockups and high-fidelity prototypes based on user feedback gained from Usability Studies, and incorporated more accessibility options while executing User-centric Design Principles.
The transition from high-fidelity mockups to an interactive prototype marks a significant leap in the design process, offering a dynamic and tangible preview of the envisioned user experience. The high-fidelity prototype becomes a bridge between vision and execution, enabling a deeper understanding of the user journey and ensuring that the final product aligns seamlessly with user expectations.
The tiny cupboard project encapsulates a transformative approach to community support, emphasizing inclusivity and ease of access for individuals facing resource challenges. During this case study, the use of user research and employing empathy have been foundational in empowering users to connect with resources that are vital to our everyday lives.
The result is an intuitive, informative app that helps users when they need it most.
The iterative process is fundamental to the dynamic nature of user experience design. Once the foundation of a seamless, user-centric experience has been established, the journey doesn't end there. The next step we work on will be refinement, iteration, and innovation.
